Intango (pronounced “Inango”) is a small washing station on the edge of Lake Kivu. Once part of a cooperative that won the 2014 Rwanda Cup of Excellence, it became run down as the cooperative dissolved. That is until our friend Gilbert Gatali took it over. Grown up in Canada but Rwandan by roots, Gilbert came back to his African roots as a coffee importer. He then continued to help hundreds of farmers improve their quality as manager of Rwanda's first farmer-owned specialty coffee export company. Finally, after 13 years of managing coffee quality indirectly, he and his best friend Gervais are fulfilling their dreams of running their own specialty coffee washing station.
The washing station works with only 400 supplying farmers, but this gives Gilbert the oversight to make lasting impact for all of them. ‘Intango’ itself is Kinyarwanda for “beginning”: Gilbert’s intention was to create a communal starting point for farmers, staff and community to come together, grow and change their lives positively. Gilbert invests in both quality and environmental sustainability (organic fertilisation and shade trees), with a special role for women in managerial positions.
CULTIVARS
Arabica Bourbon types: French Mission, Jackson, Mbirizi

2019: Started natural trials, imported both naturals and washed coffees.
PROCESSING

Fana means "the first light". This lot is named after Fana, the youngest daughter of the Bette Buna founders, Dawit and Hester.
After washing the skins, these sweet sticky beans laid with about 30% of mucilage remaining for a short period on raised beds. Two 3-hour-sunlight-shifts a day creates a an outstanding balanced coffee.
Bette Buna lot Fana is a honey-processed coffee from Ethiopia's Guji region. Its light roast is perfectly balanced and full of flavor. It's packed in plastic-free packaging, and is roasted at Östra Grevie Kafferosteri to bring out the best from this one-of-a-kind origin.
We believe everyone deserves an equal chance on development. No matter your background, race, gender, disability or economic position. Every talent deserves to get a chance on making a change for a better world.
Founders: Dawit Syoum & Hester Westerveld
In 2020 grandfather of Dawit Syoum and Hester Westerveld passed away on their family coffee farm in Sidamo, Ethiopia. Together with their family members Dawit and Hester created a plan to fulfill one of their ánd grandfather’s last wishes: Solving the huge challenge of poverty and inequality that many Ethiopian coffee communities still face. They took over the lead of the coffee farm in Sidamo and put a point at the horizon.

After the launch in Malmö this September we are excited to release the Katana natural here in the ÖGKR webshop!
INTRODUCTION
The cooperative society RAEK in the town of Katana baffled our friends at @thissideupcoffee when they first arrived there in March, 2017. A state of the art washing station, organic fertilisation and reforestation schemes - and yet only one buyer, albeit a very loyal one (Oxfam). This is partly due to the fact that East Congo is still being discovered by the specialty coffee industry, and partly because almost no one had ever heard of the specialty coffee phenomenon. Whatever the case, this was a situation they needed to change.
Because of the coop’s good prices and honest payment ethic, farmers are flocking to RAEK to become members. At the same time, the coop had many institutional and financial challenges these last years. They survived partly because of the energy and perseverance of its loyal manager: lifelong coffee farmer and agronomist Désiré Zagabe - and partly because of the unwavering support of Stefaan Calmeyn and Oxfam. On @thissideupcoffee s first visit with Agriterra in 2017, they invited the farmers to roast and cup their own coffees for the first time. In 2018, they connected them to our friends at Abakundakawa Rushashi to teach them to make naturals to save water and diversify. Expect beautiful red berries, fruit flavours and a syrupy body for the natural.
CULTIVARS
Arabica JBM (a Typica) and Bourbon (Jackson)
ALTITUDE
1,400 - 1,800 meters above sea level
NOTABLE
Organic certified, evolved reforestation practices that are transforming the local ecosystem.
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS
2017: first visit This Side Up, on site cupping of the coop’s coffees with RAEK members.
2018: reorganisation of the coop management, meeting Lennart, Désiré and Stefaan in Rwanda to discuss first import and creation of naturals.
2019: RAEK and Abakundakawa exchanged knowledge on several visits, RAEK created the coop’s first natural processed coffees with their help. First TSU import of RAEK’s coffees.
PROCESSING
Naturals: first shade dried, then sun dried and consistently turned to achieve the lowest possible amount of defects - after the method used by Abakundakawa Rushashi in Rwanda.

INTRODUCTION
Located in Llano Bonito of Naranjo, West Valley of Costa Rica, the plantation is recognised for its specialty coffee production.
The plantation is the first ever to be planted with 100% F-1 Hybrid varieties and serves as testing ground for innovation and best practices.
Altitude: 1800 above sea level
Variety: Milenio
Processes: washed
Plantation size: 11.6 hectares
INNOVATION IN AGRICULTURE
Fernando and Angie own coffee plantations in the Western Valley of Costa Rica. This region has been called one of the most complex due to its microclimates. Morning sunshine, afternoon rain, volcanic soils and high elevations without frost... coffee growing paradise! This region also accumulates an extremely high percentage of Cup of Excellence winners.
Their estate is located at more than 1800 meters above sea level. Their goal is to find the most ideal processing methods for each variety that they harvest.
Fernando is an agricultural engineer and pioneer in the cultivation of new hybrid F-1 coffee varieties. These have been developed by World Coffee Research together with Catie and Sirad University, with the intention of developing genetic diversity and driving the industry's sustainability. These varieties are stronger against climate change and plant diseases than their local counterparts, requiring less pesticides and have a higher production yield.
Angie recently acquired her Q-grader certification. Her tasting skills and dedication means that the quality of the coffee they produce will only continue to improve by combining their knowledge in cultivation all the way to processing, roasting and up to the final cup result.
F-1 Hybrids make their land not only more productive than average, but result in amazing quality coffees with high SCA cupping scores.
THE MILENIO VARIETY
The Milenio Varietal is a cross breed between Sarchimor and Rume Sudan. It has very good cup quality at elevations above 1300 meters and well-adapted to agroforestery conditions.
It has a large fruit size and the cherry has more mucilage, making intrinsically fruitier and sweeter than other varieties.
F1 Hybrid varieties are created by crossing genetically distinct parents (for example, a wild Ethiopian variety x Caturra). The offspring of the cross are first-generation (F1) hybrids. F1 Hybrids are notable because they tend to:
1. Have significantly higher production than non-hybrids.
2. Maintain high cup quality ideal for the specialty coffee market.
3. Are disease resistant (need significantly less agrochemicals)
F-1 hybrids are the hope for a sustainable future in the coffee industry!
