INTRODUCTION
With a water- and energy saving triple fermentation method, advanced pulp recycling methods and two women empowerment organisations, Rushashi coffee washing station (CWS) is truly progressive. In 2017-2018, they rocked the European coffee scene with a killer natural experiment that we plan to keep in our assortment in coming years.
Rushashi serves as a prime example of how Rwandan cooperative societies can become sustainable by constantly improving quality and operating sustainably. With the help of MISOZI, a local private but social exporting business, they are able to sell their unforgettably complex coffees worldwide - it's no surprise that they frequently earn a place in the Rwanda Cup Of Excellence competition (highest: 3d place!). For three years, This Side Up's premium has been invested in Rushashi's financial independence from rural banks by the cooperative's members, while from 2017 onwards, we have been investing in a nursery for shade trees and other plants that organically strengthen the coffee.

Since 2016, we are pioneering "village lots". In the 2019-2020 season, we imported lots collected from the village of Rutabo only. Organic and produced Fair Trade certified, emphasis on women empowerment, several Cup of Excellence awards.
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS
2014: first direct sales of Rushashi coffee in Europe, creation of savings account for harvest working capital to avoid rural loans.
2015: creation of the country's first cascara trials, subject of a value chain exhibition at the Ethnology Museum in Leiden, the Netherlands.
2016: export of cascara approved, first village lots created and exported: Burimba and Minazi.
2017: new village lot created (Rutabo), first PB and high grade natural lot imported by This Side Up.
2018: After the success of the experimental natural lots, we created two natural village lots: Rutabo and Minazi. Nursery for shade trees and other organic intercrops created with our premium.
2019: starting agroforestry trials on a microlot close to the Rushashi washing station. Decided to import the natural and washed lot of Rutabo village only.

Intango (pronounced “Inango”) is a small washing station on the edge of Lake Kivu. Once part of a cooperative that won the 2014 Rwanda Cup of Excellence, it became run down as the cooperative dissolved. That is until our friend Gilbert Gatali took it over. Grown up in Canada but Rwandan by roots, Gilbert came back to his African roots as a coffee importer. He then continued to help hundreds of farmers improve their quality as manager of Rwanda's first farmer-owned specialty coffee export company. Finally, after 13 years of managing coffee quality indirectly, he and his best friend Gervais are fulfilling their dreams of running their own specialty coffee washing station.
The washing station works with only 400 supplying farmers, but this gives Gilbert the oversight to make lasting impact for all of them. ‘Intango’ itself is Kinyarwanda for “beginning”: Gilbert’s intention was to create a communal starting point for farmers, staff and community to come together, grow and change their lives positively. Gilbert invests in both quality and environmental sustainability (organic fertilisation and shade trees), with a special role for women in managerial positions.

After the launch in Malmö this September we are excited to release the Katana natural here in the ÖGKR webshop!
INTRODUCTION
The cooperative society RAEK in the town of Katana baffled our friends at @thissideupcoffee when they first arrived there in March, 2017. A state of the art washing station, organic fertilisation and reforestation schemes - and yet only one buyer, albeit a very loyal one (Oxfam). This is partly due to the fact that East Congo is still being discovered by the specialty coffee industry, and partly because almost no one had ever heard of the specialty coffee phenomenon. Whatever the case, this was a situation they needed to change.
Because of the coop’s good prices and honest payment ethic, farmers are flocking to RAEK to become members. At the same time, the coop had many institutional and financial challenges these last years. They survived partly because of the energy and perseverance of its loyal manager: lifelong coffee farmer and agronomist Désiré Zagabe - and partly because of the unwavering support of Stefaan Calmeyn and Oxfam. On @thissideupcoffee s first visit with Agriterra in 2017, they invited the farmers to roast and cup their own coffees for the first time. In 2018, they connected them to our friends at Abakundakawa Rushashi to teach them to make naturals to save water and diversify. Expect beautiful red berries, fruit flavours and a syrupy body for the natural.

2017: first visit This Side Up, on site cupping of the coop’s coffees with RAEK members.
2018: reorganisation of the coop management, meeting Lennart, Désiré and Stefaan in Rwanda to discuss first import and creation of naturals.
2019: RAEK and Abakundakawa exchanged knowledge on several visits, RAEK created the coop’s first natural processed coffees with their help. First TSU import of RAEK’s coffees.
